10th Advanced Phytoplankton Course: Taxonomy and Systematics

The course will be held 12-30 November 2012.
Participants should arrive on 11 November and depart on 1 December.

The 10th Advanced Phytoplankton Course is being organized in cooperation by the Marine Biological Section of the Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, Naples, Italy, and the IOC Science and Communication Centre on Harmful Algae.

The faculty includes:

  • Federica Cerino (Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale, Oceanografia Biologica, S. Croce, Italy)
  • Niels Daugbjerg (Marine Biological Section, Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen, Denmark)
  • Marianne Ellegaard (Marine Biological Section, Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen, Denmark)
  • Gert Hansen (Marine Biological Section, Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen, Denmark)
  • Mona Hoppenrath (Forschungsinstitut Senckenberg, DZMB - Deutsches Zentrum für Marine Biodiversitätsforschung, Wilhelmshaven, Germany)
  • Per Juel Hansen, (Marine Biological Section, Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen, Denmark)
  • Carina B. Lange (Department of Oceanography, University of Concepción, Chile)
  • Jacob Larsen (IOC Science and Communication Centre on Harmful Algae, Copenhagen, Denmark)
  • Nina Lundholm (Natural History Museum, University of Copenhagen, Denmark)
  • Øjvind Moestrup (Marine Biological Section, Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen, Denmark)
  • Marina Montresor (Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, Naples, Italy)
  • Ian Probert (Station Biologique Roscoff, France)
  • Diana Sarno, (Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, Naples, Italy)
  • Carmelo R. Tomas ( University of North Carolina, Wilmington , USA)
  • Adriana Zingone (Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, Naples, Italy)

The course will consist of training on specific recognition of marine planktonic algae, with emphasis on light microscopy and use of taxonomic literature. The aim of the course is to increase and update the expertise of the students in the identification of diatoms, dinoflagellates, coccolithophores and other phytoflagellates. Special attention will be given to species implicated in the formation of exceptional or harmful blooms.

Participation is limited to 20 participants with PhD, MSc degree or equivalent, and with documented experience in phytoplankton identification by microscopy. A good knowledge of the English language is necessary. A registration fee of EUR 4,500 is required, which includes course tuition and material and full board for the whole period. Funds are being sought with the aim to reduce the fee to EUR 4,000.

Applications must include a complete mailing address and a condensed curriculum vitae. The applicant's experience relevant to the course, as well as research interests, should be briefly reported. Two recommendation letters are welcome.
