Primary fields of research

 

 Control of cell volume , cell proliferation, migration and programmed cell death.

Control of cell volume is one of the most basic physiological functions of every cell and regulation of the choice between cell proliferation and cell death is of crucial importance for all multi cellular organisms. A complex intracellular signalling network controls the regulation of cell size as well as the delicate balance between life and death. Cell volume regulation and the regulation of cell proliferation or apoptosis exhibit multiple common features, and several lines of evidence indicate that these processes are closely interconnected. Proliferation is frequently associated with cell swelling and is stimulated by osmotic swelling. Conversely, cell shrinkage is a characteristic for cells undergoing programmed cel death (apoptosis). The exact coupling between cell swelling and proliferation and between cell shrinkage and triggering of apoptosis is, however far from clear. To solve these problems we study the signalling sequences and the ion transporters involved in these regulations in cell cultures with electrophysiological and molecular biological techniques. In addition the interaction between cloned receptors and ion channel proteins are studied after expression in Xenopus oocytes or HEK cells.and necessary feature of apoptosis.

Current research
