Section of Microbiology receives 2.5 mill. DKK for a Confocal ZEISS LSM 800 with Airyscan microscope

Confocal ZEISS LSM 800 with Airyscan microscope

The Section of Microbiology has on the 30th of October 2015 received funding for a Confocal ZEISS LSM 800 with Airyscan microscope. The project "Multifocal, a closer look at social interactions" was granted by Villum Fonden.

From studies of interspecies bacterial interactions, it has become apparent the interactions results in emergent properties, and thus a complex community cannot be described and characterized from analysis of individual protagonists in isolation. As social interactions have gained increased attention as important drivers in ecology and evolution the implementation of detailed spatial and temporal analysis using advanced confocal microscopy is an essential  next step, which will profoundly enhance the future  quality and impact of research in multispecies social interactions. Current research is based on high throughput studies that produce a great deal of information and data. The LSM 800 will validate the results from this research  in the areas of microbiology as a model for socio-biology and evolution and it will enable 2-, 3- and 4D visualization of investigations currently underway and planned at Department of Biology and at the Section of Microbiology.
