Title: Sex differences the rodent HPA axis in acute and chronic restraint stress models

Abstract: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common mental illness, which affects approximately 280 million people worldwide, with a higher prevalence in females compared to males. It is well known that the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is dysregulated in a subset of patients with MDD, presenting with HPA axis hyperactivity and deficit negative cortisol feedback.

The aim of this thesis is to characterize HPA axis dynamics in an acute and chronic restraint stress model in male and female mice and further evaluate the translatability of the HPA axis changes in the chronic restraint stress model to human MDD patients with HPA axis hyperactivity.
