Personal webpage ORCID Google Scholar | STRENGHTS AND METHODS genome engineering (e.g. by CRISPR/Cas), synthetic biology, fluorescence reporter gene technologies, FACS, CLSM, high-throughput sequencing, transcriptomics, and classical microbiology methodologies FOCUS My research focuses on how bacteria interact, the molecular biology behind interactions, and how these social interactions evolve. Basically, the molecular biology and evolution of conflict, manipulation, sharing, and dependencies among bacteria. I am especially interested in the role horizontal gene transfer gene-sharing between bacteria has in bacterial social evolution. The critical increase of antibiotic resistance among infectious bacteria, for example, is a striking and scary outcome of horizontal gene transfer. Sharing of genes is typically facilitated by mobile genetic elements and I studying how such elements interact with the rest of the host genome, in addition to how such interactions effect the social behavior of the host bacterium. In order to experimentally address the hypothesis driven research briefly described above, an important part of my work is to develop molecular tools and engineer bacteria. The experimental research conducted by my group utilizes genome engineering (e.g. by CRISPR/Cas), synthetic biology, and fluorescence reporter gene technologies, FACS, CLSM, high-throughput sequencing, transcriptomics, and classical microbiology methodologies. We also use in vivo animal and plant models that are made available by collaborators with proper facilities. INDUSTRY POTENTIAL Antibiotic resistance

Personal webpage ORCID Google Scholar | STRENGHTS AND METHODS Plant-microbial interactions Fungal biology Molecular Ecology DNA Barcoding Community analysis FOCUS My main contribution to science has been through application of molecular markers to disentangle otherwise hidden fungal communities and populations associated with plants and soil and addressing the functional ecology of these species rich fungal guilds. In recent years the focus has been on: 1) how fungal communities are structured in time and space and 2) how the environment changes fungal communities and how these changes feedback on ecosystem functions. Much of my work have focused on symbiotic root colonizing fungi especially mycorrhizal fungi. I have developed molecular markers for tracking these in plant roots and soil but are also confident with applying biochemical markers as well as classical microscopic examinations when needed. For this we are particularly interested in the numerous secondary messenger molecules derived from nucleotides in both model organisms and important bacterial pathogens. INDUSTRY POTENTIAL Discovery of novel targets and elucidation of the molecular mechanisms underlying bacterial tolerance to stresses and antibiotics hold great potential to the development of more efficient methods of controlling bacterial infection and therefore the emergence and spread of multi-drug resistant bacteria.
