Heavy metal effects on moss-associated N fixation

Moss-associated nitrogen (N) fixation by cyanobacteria is a main input of new N to ecosystems like boreal forests, subarctic tundra and tropical cloud forests. While we have shown that N fixation in mosses is inhibited by increased N pollution, N fixation is less sensitive to heavy metal input. In this project, we will answer the question: What is the threshold of heavy metal pollution above which N fixation in mosses is inhibited?
