Moss-cyanobacteria associations: are they mutualists or parasites?

Main area:Ecology
Target group:Biology
Educational level:Masters, Bachelor
Project description:

Mosses are colonized by cyanobacteria that fix atmospheric nitrogen (N). But we do not know which type of relationship they share. Do they interact to benefit each other? Or are they passive lodgers? Or even parasitic? In this project, we will assess if the partners (moss and cyanobacteria) benefit from each other when they grow together (via e.g. measurements of growth, photosynthesis) or if they do worse when they grow together.

Methods used:nitrogen fixation measurements, growth measurements, photosynthesis measurements, microscopy
Keywords:Symbiosis, Mosses, Cyanobacteria , Nitrogen
