Current research

Research projects comprise algae and other protists. Most ongoing projects may be grouped under the following headings:

  • Classification and phylogeny of algae and other protists. Phytoplankton (freshwater and marine), ultrastructure, taxonomy, autecology, toxicity and biogeography. Special emphasis on dinoflagellates, prasinophytes and non-calcified haptophytes.
  • Toxic plankton algae of the marine phytoplankton. The projects generally involve light and transmission electron microscopy techniques on material collected directly from nature, or isolated into pure cultures maintained at the Scandinavian Culture Collection of Algae and Protozoa, which is located at the institute.

Several ongoing projects involve colleagues and students at the Phycology Department. External co-operation comprises in particular colleagues at University of Tsukuba, Japan, University of Melbourne, Australia, and University of Oslo, Norway. Joint projects and supervision of master and phd projects presently comprise toxic bluegreen algae, dinoflagellate mixotrophy, taxonomy and ultrastructure of Chrysochromulina, phylogeny and taxonomy of freshwater dinoflagellates with emphasis on species in the Woloszynskia group, taxonomy and ultrastructure of Pseudo-nitzschia, marine raphidophytes, and toxic benthic dinoflagellates.
A special project comprises writing of a new volume on dinoflagellates for the "Süsswasserflora von Mitteleuropa".
