Effects of environmental pollutants on freshwater organisms

Hovedområde:Aquatic biology
Målgruppe:Biology, Biochemistry
Niveau:Masters, Bachelor

Assessments of the effect of environmental pollutants (pesticides, heavy metals, micro plastic etc.) on aquatic organisms are based on standard laboratory experiments using single species of algae, crustaceans, macro invertebrates or even fish. End point measurements are usually growth, feeding, survival, reproduction and swimming behavior.  A variety of methods are available such as the classic dose-response experiments (LC50), life table experiments, observations of behavioral patterns and analyses of biodiversity. Complementary studies might include in situ experiments in mesocosms placed in lakes which could for instance aim to investigate the differences in sensitivity between calanoid and cyclopoid copepods, cladocerans and rotifers etc.

Thus, the possibilities are many, so come and let us discuss which type of scitenfic questions you find intersting and which type of field/lab work you would like to get experience with.
