Pest control that doesn't destroy biodiversity, the environment and human health.

In short, this is the mission of Associate Professor Kenneth Veland Halberg and Postdoc Eva Maria Rebrova at the Department of Biology, who have started the spin-out company NanoGuard Crop Solutions.

The company has just become part of the BioInnovation Institute, which helps accelerate promising start-ups that can improve human and planetary health.

And it's fair to say that the two researchers' project can do just that. Today, our food production cannot survive without the use of pesticides, which pollute our groundwater, harm our health, and kill bees and other important pollinators. At the same time, pests destroy up to 50 percent of global food production every year.

- This marks an exciting milestone as we accelerate our R&D, forge strategic partnerships, and pioneer breakthrough innovations in eco-friendly pest control alongside some of the brightest minds in human and planetary health. Joining BII Venture Lab unlocks access to cutting-edge research, world-class mentorship, and a vibrant network of industry leaders. This opportunity will propel our mission to develop sustainable solutions that safeguard food production while preserving biodiversity, the environment, and human health, says Associate Professor Kenneth Veland Halberg.

NanoGuard Crop Solutions develops the next generation of green protection methods for agriculture. The company's revolutionary protein-based technology is more specific than conventional chemical tools, and it also does not affect benign insects or have harmful effects on humans and the environment.
