Marine Biology Specialisation

As a Master's student at Biology, you may choose one of five specializations:

  1. Cell Biology and Physiology
  2. Ecology
  3. Marine Biology
  4. Microbiology
  5. Molecular Biology and Genetics

If you follow the Marine Biology specialization, you will get expert knowledge of the structure and function of marine ecosystems, and of the ecology of marine organisms, and their physiology, interactions, and adaptation to the marine environment.

You will acquire the necessary competences to explain the fluxes of energy and of organic and inorganic matter in marine systems. Furthermore, you will learn about marine microorganisms, animal groups, and habitat types, and you will get an overview of the complexity of ecosystems and biodiversity.

You will learn to collect, identify, and categorize marine organisms into overall groups. You will also become able to use genetic methods for identification and typing of species.

Programme Overview
The specialization can be structured in different ways, depending on whether you write a thesis worth 45 or 60 ECTS and whether you start in September or February.

You can design your own marine biological specialization by choosing among the  'restricted elective subject elements'. We strongly suggest that you use the restricted elective subject element 'Project outside the course scope' to do an experimental project of your own choosing in a topic related to marine biology.

For a complete list of compulsory, restricted elective courses and elective courses, please see the Msc in Biology-page in the Studies at UCPH section.
